EQUIPMENT AND RANGE OF SERVICE

The Department of Interventional Cardiology in University Hospital in Krakow has two operating theatres equipped with two Axiom Artis angiography systems by Siemens. Full range of coronary and peripheral (lower limb, carotid, subclavian, renal) interventions is performed. Moreover, we perform FFR measurements, IVUS, VH studies, OCT. We percutaneously close atrial septal defects, perform interventions within dialysis fistulas and qualify patients for transapical and transfemoral aortic valve implantation.

Both cath labs are equipped with the device for monitoring activated clotting time (ACT) to adjust precisely heparin dosage during PCI. In this way the safety of new antiplatelet agents - intravenous IIb/IIIa platelet receptor inhibitors - is improved.

Routine monitoring of ACT during planned and urgent PCI procedures allows also to identify patients resistant to heparin, who receive bivalirudin instead. Recently the inhibition of platelet aggregation has been measured routinely to monitor the efficacy of antiplatelet therapy.

Intraaortic counterpulsation (IABP) is used (Kaat II plus Arrow) for support in high risk interventions (cardiogenic shock, haemodynamic compromise, ischaemic cardiomyopathy).

NUMBERS

In 2010, 1994 coronarographies and 1207 PCI procedures were performed, including 551 PCI performed in patients with acute coronary syndromes (492 in STEMI).

STUDENTS' SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY

For many years the Students' Scientific Society has conducted its own projects and helped run currently ongoing trials and projects in the Department. The papers produced yearly by students are presented and awarded both at Polish (Krakow, Warsaw, Gdansk, Szczecin, Katowice, Wroclaw) and international student conferences (Berlin, Cairo, Leiden). In 2005, 6 projects were presented during the biggest european medical students' congress in Berlin. One of the papers won the 1st Prize of the Cardiology Session. Last year 2 more abstracts were presented by our students in Berlin. Many of the society past members continue their scientific careers as doctors in our Department.

UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

The University Hospital is the leading research and academic centre. It is a clinical base for the Jagiellonian University Medical College and thus participates in education of physicians, nurses, paramedics and technicians. The scientific activity is acknowledged by numerous publications and scientific degrees bestowal. The Hospital cooperates with many international medical centers carrying out cooperative research. You will find more information on the hospital here.
